We eschewed the database-centred, search-lite and transactional method that seems to have become the norm in today's fragmented and competitive recruitment industry. Instead, we listened to the market and built a business model that truly meets clients' needs: one that is led by people with industry knowledge, underpinned by innovative research and market intelligence, committed to high-quality due diligence, highly personalised and focused on long-term partnership working.

This response to the healthcare market's need has seen us flourish. Thanks to an enviable rate of repeat business and the significant momentum of new clients connecting with our approach, we have two well-established arms to our search business: a corporate board practice and a non-executive director practice. Following client requests to fill a perceived gap in the clinical space, we have also recently launched a clinical search practice.

Between us, we have experience of working within a number of NHS providers and commissioners, the Department of Health and some of its arm's-length bodies. In addition to our in-house expertise, our market knowledge is underwritten by the support and guidance of our advisory board of healthcare system leaders.

Research & intelligence
In light of the constantly evolving map of top talent in the healthcare sector, it is wholly insufficient to rely on a candidate database, advertising and a cursory search to achieve quality results. With each and every assignment, we start with a blank canvas and listen to the client's needs in order to inform our research – the bedrock of quality headhunting. Our highly specialised research team then applies its deep understanding of quantitative methodologies to explore exhaustively the candidate market and unearth candidates who would be missed by an over-reliance on conventional techniques.

Quality executive search needs robust research to be overlaid by a pipeline of market intelligence. At Hunter Healthcare, we have created a strong interface between our executive team and our interim practice, which provides the leading executive interims across the healthcare sector. This link is not the accepted wisdom in our industry – many firms do not even have an interim practice – but our access to this very senior resource is a powerful asset and has regularly provided valuable insights into the performance, capability, strategy and operating style of many trust boards. This intelligence has, in turn, allowed us to predict more confidently the professional and behavioural traits of candidates who will fit within a culture.
