Situation

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust had a vision to implement ePROMs – Electronic questionnaires completed by patients to provide insight into patients physical and mental health, short & long term symptoms and disease/treatment impact on lifestyle and quality of life.

The benefits of ePROMs are as follows:

For patients

  • Better survival
  • Fewer hospital admissions
  • Better quality of life
  • Personalised follow-up
  • Better patient-clinician engagement

For the Trust

  • Key enabling role in delivering Trusts digital strategy and maturity
  • Evaluation of clinical pathways
  • Feed into big data platform
  • Higher quality research

Task

Hunter Healthcare was engaged by the Trust to provide a Project Manager for the ePROMs implementation for the following reasons:

  • Product had been procured from supplier two years previously
  • Progress on its implementation had stalled due to lack of resource and specialist expertise in clinical system implementation
  • Impacting:
  1. Quality of patient care
  2. Progression of the Trusts digital vision
  3. Cost of inactive product

Action

Hunter Healthcare sourced and provided a contract Project Manager, on a deliverable and outcome based contract to be accountable for projects delivery and success.

Result

The candidate Hunter Healthcare sourced for The Christie NHS Foundation Trust successfully delivered on the following outcomes:

  • Successfully implemented ePROMs (Electronic Patient Reported Outcome Measures) in a number of cancer sites and treatment modalities by working in partnership with the Research and Innovation department, to enhance clinical consultations and improve patient care. In addition, feed into the Real-World Data strategy.
  • Pioneered the FHIR upgrade integration for the EPR (Electronic Patient Record) and ePROMs system by liaising with Applications, Infrastructure, Solutions and development partners in drawing up a robust plan, ensuring test environments are reliable, and conducting several testing cycles resulting in a smooth go live and no impact to clinical and patient experience.
  • Negotiated a 50% cost reduction for the contract renewal of an ePROMs system by demonstrating value in line with procurement procedures.
  • Produced PID for a Privileged Management Solution to enable external clinical trial monitors secure remote access to the Trust EPR system. In addition, to meet NHSD Cyber Essentials accreditation.
